Milwaukee Journal Sentinel 01-31-09 (Waukesha County)WCTC reaches deal with UWM on transfers
Students who earn associate degrees in electrical engineering and mechanical engineering at Waukesha County Technical College will not be able to transfer with junior status to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of Engineering, under an agreement announced Friday.
The announcement comes as the Waukesha Higher Education Coalition, which includes the Waukesha County Action Network business group, has pushed for more bachelor’s degree opportunities for Waukesha County.
“We know that Waukesha County, along with the rest of southeastern Wisconsin, needs more four-year degree holders. This is another very positive advancement in that direction,” UWM Chancellor Carlos Santiago said in a statement.
Under existing agreements with the Milwaukee School of Engineering and Marquette University, Waukesha County Technical College graduates of the two engineering programs can get junior status when the transfer to those private institutions.
But the new agreement with UWM opens up a more affordable option.
In the past, UWM would accept only up to 29 credits from WCTC graduates of these programs. To complete UWM’s bachelor of science in engineering degree with a major in mechanical or electrical engineering, students must earn nearly 130 credits.
